A few years ago, I’d have read it and simply responded with a gruff “really”?! Now, I truly just SMH (shake my head) and use a deep eye roll.
With no ties to the Timberwolves (thank goodness), George Karl is swelling ripples of dissention and disgust across, not just the NBA, but American sports. The former NBA coach’s new book is the reason.
Karl, as you likely know by now if you’ve been to this blogspot before, is one of my favorites. I was fortunate enough to have sat in a front row seat to his team in the 1990’s. Then, Karl guided the resurrection of the Seattle SuperSonics from a floundering, under-achieving and often over-matched pack of players to a Western Conference powerhouse. Karl was a standout at North Carolina, was a journeyman pro in the ABA and would later be a top assistant to legendary coach Don Nelson.
Karl (@CoachKarl22) has coached some outstanding players, from Seattle to Denver, Golden State to Sacramento and a few points in between. Karl’s mentored and groomed staffs of assistants that now coach and lead their own teams in the NBA. But for some reason having earned millions of dollars, having survived and been given a second chance after a live-threatening illness and on top of it all, having enjoyed an amazing run coaching some of the world’s greatest athletes, it wasn’t enough.
Karl has written another book and he used a poison pen to write it. It’s called “Furious George” and someone, someone along the way, a close friend who saw this freight train coming or anyone who cared about the guy should have knocked some sense into him. “Furious George: My Forty Years Surviving NBA Divas, Clueless GMs, and Poor Shot Selection” will easily destroy all the success, the good things Coach Karl did over the years and I believe it will force Karl off the basketball radar. Karl's career is kaput.
Advance excerpts and even Karl himself while doing book promotion, showcase very negative comment and his ill-thoughts about current NBA players. Great for potential sales. Dirt sells. But how about life after that extra buck you really don’t need? I can see this and it ain’t gonna’ be pretty.
Those excerpts being leaked are good enough for me to not really want to shell out $20 or whatever to read Karl comes off like a grumpy old sour ass. It saddens me but frankly, there’s plenty of that to go around outside of the game I love to watch.
Karl’s swings his pitchfork at players you know and may really like. Sure, he gets his shots in on the usual hoopsters like JR Smith and Kenyon Martin. Karl didn’t lay off former Denver now Knicks standout and Olympic Gold medalist Carmelo Anthony.
In excerpts, reportedly ‘Melo, Smith and K-Mart are called a bunch of “AAU babies”. Karl penning them as “the spoiled brats you see in junior golf and junior tennis.” Karl takes to Anthony, writing “Carmelo was a true conundrum for me in the six years I had him. He was the best offensive player I ever coached. He was also a user of people, addicted to the spotlight and very unhappy when he had to share it.”
Among those caught in the Karl crossfire are fellow Carolina alum Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and his most recent star DeMarcus Cousins from Sacramento. It’s also been reported that some of the Cousins’ comments have been removed from the book.
This made me even crazier when I learned that Karl went after Portland’s Damien Lillard. Karl mind you, has never coached this young man nor visited with him. As Lillard puts it, “I’ve never met the man”.
What the “h” was Karl thinking? You don’t write a book overnight. It takes months. It takes help. So am I to believe that all these cats were sitting around, bringing out the negative and vile about players and their games, then dive into their upbringing and put as many players in the fishing net as you can? Pathetic.
Karl has said in recent days that he’s “surprised” by negative backlash. Seriously? Which bad vibe and aspersion you cast has you curious Coach?! Karl’s former assistant and now Portland head coach Terry Stotts is tired of answering questions about the book. Stotts says Karl “should stay in his own lane” and that he “Can’t tolerate” Karl blaming Lillard for Portland’s struggles.
Karl’s cooked up a controversy that will follow him to his grave. Hey Wolves fans did Rick Adelman write a scathing tell all. How about Sam Mitchell? Maybe David Kahn? There are plenty of former players, coaches and team members who have the ability to do it but choose wisely and walk away from the temptation. Karl did not. For that, he’ll sadly pay the price and it will be far more expensive than the cost of the book.
I’d love to hear from you, if for nothing else, just to see if anyone else has had enough of the mud. C’mon. Did Karl need to write this book? He’s clearly out of touch. 27 seasons of coaching in the NBA and this? A winner in three of every five games he coached and this?! THIS is not the legacy a successful and former NBA Coach of the year leaves. But it’s a lock now.
I loved this note from SimonsSays reader James. He dropped it into my mailbox after the Christmas day game @ OKC. James, as he’d tell you, is passionate about the Wolves. I’ve seen him at a few games and he gets worked up. James too is tired of, what I called last week, the “dark fan chatter” stirred by some about the Wolves.
James wrote, “I’m writing not to complain about the game. We are better than we played. I just think it’s going to be a great 2017. I’m with you on the Wolves turning the corner. Look what KAT, Zach and Wiggs are doing. The Wild are great again so I see good things ahead. Keep up the good work and see you on GameON!”.
Perfect! James, I love your PWA (positive Wolves attitude) and to you, thanks for being a part of SimonsSays and I hope your holidays were special. Cheers and playoffs to us all in 2017!
Let’s do this! It’s time to watch a winner grow right before us. They’ll get there. Mark my words.
Still keeping Sid in our thoughts! His statue sits outside Target Center. He’s 96 years old and still goes stronger than many of us. As legends go, Sid Hartman is one of Minnesota’s largest and he’s on the mend. Sid is healing after falling and breaking his hip. Sid had surgery the next day and then, 24-hours after that, he was gently back on his feet.
Add Sid to your thoughts and prayers this holiday season. Truly, he is one of a kind. Feel better Sid! You got your GameON!
