Garth. He’s owned Target Center for the past 10-days and it’s time to call it a show.
The Wolves have been on the long and winding NBA road, from the Big Apple to Mexico’s biggest city to the Big Easy and ending in Big D. In all, a business trip that defines this team in the early season. So, with the injury to Ricky Rubio, the Wolves are reshaping their line-up and forced to get busy earlier.
Already, I’m sensing nervousness among the fans with whom I’ve chatted. That is to be expected. Coach Flip moving untested rookie Zach LaVine is getting minutes and opportunity but is he ready? We’ll certainly find out because it’s Coach’s plan to bring Mo Williams off the bench, in his regular 6th man role, to hold the fort until Rubio’s return.
It’s not gonna’ be easy. Without that stable point player, other players are going to be up-and-down. One marquee Wolves player is stirring some fans. Dan in MPLS writes:” The Wolves need to unload (Kevin) Martin at any cost. Has always been overrated, but his body language now shouts his desire to not be on this team. In 35 years of coaching I have never seen a lazier, one-dimensional player. The Wolves need more offense, (especially now without Rubio providing assists), but this guy is not worth having on the court. Whatever he gives you on offense, is more than lost on the other end of the court. Great free throw shooter, but needs a volume of shots and very inconsistent--more importantly, selfish as can be.
Dan thanks but while Martin might drive you crazy he’s not the only factor in the funk that’s befallen the Wolves. Martin has scored at just over 18 a game this season and as the team is stumbling on this road swing, they are looking for more consistency. Granted, K-Mart has struggled in his past two games after lighting up earlier efforts with back to back to back 20-point games. But again, it goes back to the entire team adjusting with the loss of Rubio for the time being.
Look for Coach Flip to continue pushing the ball, trying to use his young team’s athleticism to its advantage and on the defensive end, being even more aggressive while cutting turnovers. A tall task? Yes. But doable.
Trouble in C ’town?
Did you miss it this week on social media? The Cleveland Cavaliers new “Big3”, LeBron, Kyrie Irving and former Timberwolves All Star Kevin Love are also struggling to mesh and make strides in this early season.
And as sure as they work to make it happen, new “reports” surface that Love has already made up his mind and is going to opt-for free agency after seasons-end with an eye on joining the LA Lakers.
This had fans filling my email with their own opinions. All thankful. Darren in New Hope, “I knew this was going to happen and it was just a matter of time. The Wolves don’t have to win another game and I’m considering this season a win. Love is self-centered; he’s all about “I” and not team. Good riddance”.
Matt in Wayzata, “well, well, well. Surprise. Thank you Flip for getting Love out and getting something back in return”.
Those are just two notes of dozens just like it. IF Kevin Love is really putting out that information, he should reconsider. The Cav’s deserve better. Love has a responsibility to play with Ohio on his radar, not Southern California.
I’ve said it before and will one more time. Flip did the right thing and this franchise is in a better place moving forward with this renovated roster without Love.
